The Farnborough International Airshow is the UK’s biggest aerospace event featuring many announcements across the UK space industry. The 2018 event included a number of interactive talks exploring a range of space topics with participants from the UK Space Agency, NASA, and the European Space Agency. The UK strategy is to promote the value of space-based services in the broader economy, to increase exports and to attract investment. Many of the companies who attended Farnborough—which ran from July 16th to July 20th—were marketing nano-satellites, launching services, and offering communications and data analytics.
Spacebit was the first blockchain-space company to exhibit at the Farnborough Airshow. The main goal of Spacebit is to democratize access and to devolve the space industry by decentralizing commercial space missions. The company wants to enable citizens to take part directly in space programs. Spacebit has many projects in the pipeline as part of its space exploration plans.
During the trade show, Spacebit established close relationships with major industry players and signed an agreement with Goonhilly—the Earth’s largest private space gateway.
It was announced at the Airshow that Spacebit is planning to build a new ecosystem for ground-based elements in space missions, including radio communications, ground networks and, eventually, components of mission control. The company plans to utilize Goonhilly’s existing network of over 60 dishes to run its first project. Spacebit is also moving towards the creation of a Space-Blockchain Alliance aimed at facilitating innovation and bringing long term benefits to society by applying disruptive blockchain technologies to the space industry, from smart contracts and data tokenization through to secure data storage and communications protocols.
Spacebit CTO Nadeem Gabbany commented: “We have established close relationships with major industry players and are proud to exhibit at one of the largest events in the space industry—the Farnborough Airshow. The ‘SpaceZone’ at Farnborough is one of the world’s largest aerospace expositions and this is a good time to invest and push blockchain technology into space projects.”
